What is the USENET?

The USENET is a discussion network that spans about 10,000 servers across the world. People post articles, messages and binary files to this network which goes to their local server and is then distributed throughout the rest of the network. There is no central location for this network of servers so all servers feed into and off of the network in a highly dynamic manner. Some groups are moderated, meaning that articles are cleared before posting and many groups are not. Binary groups tend not to be moderated. We encourage you to go to the above link in order to understand what the USENET is and is not. Briefly, no person, group, government, business, organization, etc...has control or authority over the entire USENET. Some servers reside in univeristies, some belong to individuals, and a vast number belong tocommercial entities. There are certain conventions that most USENET users would like everyone to use, but you will find that anarchy tends to rule the unmoderated newsgroups. Some conventions are that people shouldn't spam, or post inappropriate or illegal material in newsgroups.
