TROUBLESHOOTING- LINKS NOT WORKING IN MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER
4.0 There is a bug in MSIE 4, which causes links to the member pages to stop working. Symptoms: Everything seems to work fine until one day, suddenly, the links that require authentication appear dead. AOL members see a slight variant, where their passwords appear to be rejected. Primary Solution 1) The best solution is to replace all of explorer 4.0 with 4.01. Don't use "smart update" or the bad file might not be replaced. This generally solves the problem for over 99% of the people affected. 2) If you don't want to replace your browser and want to try a "halfway" solution, you might try this. * Note that this patch was sent to us by a member and although it appears to work for some people is not supported by Microsoft or PictureView. If you still want to do this, and are using Win95, continue. Click on the link to get the .reg file. Click Here (you might need to right click and choose save target as). Then place the file in the Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 folder. For people who use the default set-up location for IE4 it would be: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Internet Explorer 4." Once the file is placed in that folder, the user needs to double click on that file (LinkFix.reg) and it will automatically run the utility that will correct the problem in the Registry file. Then reboot the computer. Other things to try If not, the problem may be caused by the Active Desktop Interface. To fix the problem, you must turn this feature OFF. Here are the instructions to both turn on and off the Active Desktop To turn on the Active Desktop interface: 1.Right-click the desktop, and point to Active Desktop. Notes If you chose Web style for your desktop, the Active Desktop is already turned on. You can also turn the Active Desktop interface
on or off
clicking the Start button, pointing to To turn on the Active Desktop interface, you must install the Windows Desktop Update. In some cases this doesn't work. Here's the next steps: Download REBUFF, to correct possible Virus Overrun Patch For Windows 95 and install it. If that fails, as a web site, we're out of our league and you'll need to contact your local win95 guru or Microsoft.
