WHAT'S A ZIP FILE?
As it relates to PictureView, a zip file is a file that contains more than one file within it. For us, it's an easy way to send many pictures to you in on click. The way it works is that the zip program puts a zip header in the beginning and a zip tag at the end of the stream of data. The files are not compressed, as the net result of you waiting for our machines to compress the files, then send them, then you decompressing them would result in much longer total picture to you times, as well as slow down overall zip service. Zip downloading is a convenience and allows you to download several megs of pictures at once. The reliability of all transfers, especially zip transfers, is dependant on the quality of the connection between our sites. Some members have no trouble zip downloading files of any size, while others can only do so with smaller size files. We suggest not trying to zip download over 20 megs at a time for your greatest chance for success, but you are free to try any size you wish. There are also files that appear on our preview pages that end with .zip. They are taken straight from teh newsgroups. If there are decodable pictures in them, the pictures are decoded and displayed in the preview index after the zip file. Be aware that we don't create the clickable zips on the preview page and you should be careful when downloading them. If a zip file's name indicates that there should be pictures in the file and you don't see any in our index, be extremely cautious. In rare instances, they may contain virus or trojan horses. If you detect one, let us know and we'll remove the file. The only reason we allow them to be automatically indexed is to allow our machines to decode their pictures and allow our members access to the enclosed read me files and wallpaper files that are sometimes included in legitimate zip files.
